Back to nature: why turn your office into a relaxing oasis?
Does work really have to be associated with frantic deadlines, relentless productivity, stress, and exhaustion? Of course not. But let’s be honest – it often is. Sometimes we even trap ourselves in this self-imposed race, thinking that if we just run fast enough on the hamster wheel, we’ll eventually get somewhere worthwhile. But what if we tried something different? What if we paused, took a deep breath, and started working wisely instead of just hard? If you’re dreaming of office zen and professional harmony, the best way to start is by returning to your roots – quite literally – with nature.

The underrated power of plants
No, you don’t need to transform your workspace into a jungle or a secret garden to feel the calming embrace of nature. A few potted plants will do the trick. And it’s not just about aesthetics – although they certainly add charm. Beyond their decorative appeal, plants come with a whole list of benefits that can actually improve your health, mood, and work performance.
Between 2019 and 2020, a study conducted across nine companies measured the impact of greenery on employee wellbeing. What were some of the most noteworthy outcomes? Fewer complaints about dry air and health issues, a stronger sense of privacy, enhanced workplace appeal, and greater overall satisfaction with spending time at work.
Other studies have shown that plants help boost productivity, focus, and engagement. They’re natural stress-relievers, anxiety reducers, and even help dampen noise – making it easier to concentrate.
As a kid, I explored the forest with friends and played with sticks. Now, I explore it on two wheels, and I’ve traded the sticks for a camera.
I naturally gravitate toward the outdoors, and in the last few years, I’ve been working hard to align myself with that. So being able to include nature as part of my work is something I’m genuinely proud of.
@johanmotoAnd let’s not forget one of their greatest superpowers: air purification. Plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, but they also trap and neutralize toxic compounds like formaldehyde and benzene, while improving humidity levels indoors. If you’re on the hunt for air-purifying champions for your office, keep an eye out for snake plants (sansevieria), peace lilies, aloe vera, Boston ferns, ficus, calatheas, dracaenas, or the ever-resilient zamioculcas.

Nature at every turn
Bringing nature into your home office doesn’t have to stop with greenery. Why not go all-in and choose furnishings made from natural materials too? Wooden furniture and accessories, paired with plants, create a soothing atmosphere that benefits both your physical health and mental wellbeing.
The foundation, of course, is your desk – preferably solid wood, sourced sustainably. The touch, scent, and grain of real wood can work wonders on the senses, promoting calm, focus, and mindfulness. Complement it with wooden organizers to keep your workspace tidy and functional – because an organized desk often leads to an organized mind (and better results).
Well, when I’m in the office, my desk is a giant piece of wood — handcrafted by the good people at Oakywood. I’m sitting next to a big plant, and I like to have at least one window nearby for natural light and a view of the outside.
When I’m out in the field creating, as you can see in my content, nature is almost always part of the story.

Natural materials don’t stop at wood. To amplify the cozy, welcoming vibe, add a linen curtain at the window, a soft cotton rug, or a felt desk mat made from natural wool. These little touches make a big difference.
Sure, technology is a staple of modern work life – but even that can blend harmoniously with natural accents. A wooden wireless charger, a docking station in oak, a walnut laptop stand, or a handcrafted monitor shelf – these small additions help transform an ordinary workspace into an extraordinary haven of productivity and calm.
Bringing nature into your workspace – whether through plants, wooden furniture, or carefully chosen natural accessories – is a step toward healthier, happier, and more effective work. It doesn’t take a massive effort; just thoughtful decisions when setting up your office. And the results? They’ll often exceed your wildest expectations.
