Creating an intelligent workspace with Oakywood

Creating an intelligent workspace with Oakywood

When designing your workspace, is it worth it to look for inspiration on famous successful people’s desks or in thousands of stylish Pinterest interiors? It might be, provided it’s a subtle inspiration and not a carbon copy. A well-thought-out workspace is, first and foremost, tailored specially to answer its user’s individual needs. Instead of endlessly browsing the internet searching for a perfect desk arrangement, take matters into your own hands and design a comfortable and ergonomic home office, following a few simple rules.

How much space do you have?

The main factor that often shatters our dreams of an Instagrammable workspace is the space. Or rather lack thereof. In other words, the amount of space we can designate for a home office influences all other decisions. Start with carefully measuring your space and avoid guesstimating in your planning process.

Even the smallest corner can be transformed into a comfortable and ergonomic office - provided you utilize some smart solutions such as a made-to-measure desk, vertical storage, or handy organizers.

If you have slightly more space in your home office, think about adding a designated spot for exercise. Wait… working out at work? Absolutely! Remote work provides you with unique opportunities, one of them is being able to engage in physical activity during break. For convenience and constant motivation, permanently place a yoga mat somewhere next to your desk and within eyesight - this will enable you to use even a short break to stretch and move muscles that have been sitting in front of a screen for hours. Such small but regular exercise will improve your stamina and well-being, while positively affecting your creativity and productivity.

The basics - positioning your desk

The place you put your desk has an immense effect on your work comfort. Putting your desk in front of a window seems to be the most common practice - to maximize access to natural light. The big question is, how do we position the desk: facing the window, with the light coming from the left, right, or facing away from it altogether? In theory, either of those options is fine; in practice, it depends on the light you get and the hours you work. A desk facing an eastern or southern window would be the best solution for those working from morning till afternoon. In contrast, those who prefer working from the afternoon until nighttime benefit best from a west-facing window. If the views outside your window are too beautiful (or too busy) to focus, place your desk so that your back is turned to the window. In this case, south and east-facing windows may need a good set of blinds to stop the eager sun shining directly onto your screen.

Placing your desk sideways so that the light comes in from either side is also a great option; on the left for right-handed people and on the right for the left-handed. Through this, you benefit from natural light and oversee your entire space. It also goes hand in hand with feng shui philosophy - the desk should be positioned so that you have a wall behind you and can see the door in front of you (without directly facing it).

And if you’re looking for really smart solutions, choose Oakywood’s regulated desk with wheels! It will enable you to change your desk’s position throughout the day and work comfortably at any time.

Additional accessories to organize your space

An intelligent space is somewhere that has been well thought out to guarantee comfort, aesthetics, and functionality. You can breeze through this task by using our pre-prepared solutions: accessories that organize your home office, complement each other, and create a cohesive ecosystem - what more can you wish for? You can say that this idea has been served to you on a tray. A wooden tray to be specific.

Our desk shelf can be easily coupled with modular drawers where you can put a handy pen organizer. This will give you more storage space, making your desk look tidy and completely uncluttered. Instead of the drawers, you can place our Catchall Trays underneath the desk shelf - you can now get a set of 3 elements in different sizes. And, of course, our classic OakyBlocks for you to arrange and connect at will thanks to built-in magnets.

If you still suffer from low desk space, try utilizing your walls - our hanging shelves made of solid wood can help you with that. You can customize their dimensions in the 3D configurator. This vertical structure is not only practical but also visually interesting: an oak shelf on a white wall gives off an effortless japandi vibe.

Having a fully charged phone within arm’s reach is an important part of working from home. Our wireless charger, the docking station, or the MagSafe collection take charging and using your smartphone or iPhone to a new level. Not only can you always keep an eye on your phone, you can be sure that the battery won’t die during an important call. And if you get annoyed with seeing notifications pop up on your phone - throw it in a drawer.

Aesthetic space organization

Apart from making sure your space is comfortable, ergonomic, and functional, think about how it expresses your personality so that working there can be a pleasure. You can do it through decor pieces, prints, paintings, plants, or keepsakes that evoke treasured memories and inspire you. Be careful not to overclutter your aesthetically arranged space with distractors that decay productivity. In this case, the key is moderation.

Add a cherry on top of the cake by adding a minimalistic lamp in an interesting shape or a unique print with character. When designing our workspace, we need to remember that less really is more.
