Sustainability: an empty buzzword or a concrete concept?

It’s very easy to simply exclaim: sustainability, ecology, caring for the planet! But how do we ensure these aren’t just empty slogans or PR tactics to promote a specific brand image? At Oakywood, we talk the talk and walk the walk — we strive to make respect for nature a reality, not just a vague idea. For us, sustainability is a daily practice, and we consistently bring all those beautiful words to life.

Responsibly sourced materials

Working with wood means more to us than just making products — it’s a relationship with nature that demands responsibility and respect. That’s why we use only raw materials from verified sources, certified by the FSC® and obtained with the principles of sustainable forestry in mind. What’s more, since we take from nature, we also want to give something back: for every product sold, we plant one tree or 1 m² of forest, in collaboration with the One Tree Planted and Forest Forever foundations.

Besides wood, we also use Portuguese cork and merino wool felt to make some of our accessories. Both materials are eco-friendly: cork is harvested in a way that allows the tree to naturally regenerate, and the wool is sourced according to cruelty-free and mulesing-free standards.

Optimizing material use

Working with premium materials means we have to make sure nothing goes to waste. At Oakywood, waste reduction starts at the product strategy stage: we design our accessories to make the most of every log of wood. That’s why alongside larger items like desks, desk shelves, floating shelves, large trays, and laptop stands, you’ll also find smaller elements in our offer: a magnetic cable organizer, a pen holder, or mini tray versions. This way, nearly every piece of wood — even the smallest one — finds its purpose.

Renew instead of discard – the New Life Collection

A year ago, we took another step towards making our operations even more sustainable: we launched the New Life collection. Simply put, it’s an outlet that allows us to fully realize our environmental values, especially those related to waste reduction.

Products that were damaged in transit, produced with flaws, or simply returned by customers are sent back to our workshop in Ciche. There, our craftsmen give them new life: they restore, refine, and eliminate any imperfections so that they’re just as good as new. These accessories then return to our store — but at lower prices — and can be found in the Outlet section. The mutual benefits are clear: we can implement the principles of a circular economy more effectively and expand the definition of "renewable resources," while our customers receive high-quality products at affordable prices.
